Gilbert (Gil) George Povilaitis, Sr. of Lindenhurst, IL, peacefully passed away, with family by his side, March 22, 2022, at the young age of 94.

Born on July 12, 1927, in Waukegan, IL to John and Victoria Povilaitis. Gil was the youngest of five siblings and the last to survive.

In 1945, during World War II, Gilbert was called upon to defend our country. While attending high school, he received his draft notice, reported for duty, and was enlisted into the Army. In January of 1946, Gil received a badge for “Expert Rifleman” while serving, and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Occupation Medal, as well as the Asiatic Pacific Medal for his service overseas. He was an active member at the VFW in Lake Villa, as well as the American Legion.

Gilbert was a gamer. His love for playing games were instilled within his family, and the legacy carries on. He was an avid bowler, ending his career with a championship. A huge Sox fan! His sense of humor, along with his little chuckle, was sweet. He had one of the biggest hearts, fulfilling the needs of many. He was strong and tough, yet compassionate and humble. He was hardworking, determined, intelligent, curious, honorable, yet easy going, gentle and one very smooth, cool dude, which is how he met the love of his life.

Gilbert loved music and dancing, which landed him at the Eagle Ballroom in Milwaukee, WI, where he asked the “doll” two seats down if she would like to dance with him. Dolores said, “yes” and then “I do” and for over 64 years Gilbert and Dolores exemplified a faithful and committed marriage.

Gilbert worked for ComEd, fulfilling many positions, and after 35 years of hard work, retired as a pole setter. Gil and Dolores enjoyed vacationing, cruising and traveling around the world.

Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dolores Povilaitis (nee Kozlowski), his four children, Gilbert (Agnes) Povilaitis, Jr., Donna (Kevin) Little, Gregory G. Povilaitis, Diane (John) Germain as well as 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday, March 30, 2022. Visitation from 10 am – 12 pm, followed by a 12 pm service, at Northern Illinois Funeral Services, 31632 N. Ellis Drive Unit 209, Volo, IL 60073.  An Interment service to follow at Ascension Cemetery, 1920 Buckley Road, Libertyville, IL 60048.
