Francis J. Kattner, age 83, peacefully passed away at home while under hospice care on Saturday, January 27, 2024, after enduring many months of declining health. He was born to Gregory and Rose Kattner in May 1940 and later married Elizabeth Swiatek in May 1964. They initially crossed paths when she mistakenly took her car keys home after dropping her vehicle off for repairs at the Chevrolet dealership where Francis worked. Determined to talk to Liz, Francis offered to pick up her keys from her nearby residence, sparking the beginning of a long happy marriage that spanned 59 years. Although he wished to celebrate their 60th anniversary, it was not meant to be. Together, they raised three children, Deborah, Kenneth, and Christopher.

Francis’s passion for cars and trucks led him to become a mechanic, fulfilling his lifelong dream. He began his career at Ricketts Chevrolet in Fox Lake and attended the General Motors Training Center. He earned the title of General Motors Master Technician. In 1971, Francis established his own shop, Spring Grove Automotive, and successfully operated it until his retirement in 2005. Even in retirement, his love for staying active persisted. He took on a job cutting grass at Nippersink Golf Course which allowed him to indulge in his newfound love for golf, participating in three different leagues per week.

Francis dedicated 35 years as a volunteer firefighter for the Spring Grove Fire and Rescue Department. He loved operating the fire engine and eventually became an ambulance driver for the rescue squad. He would shut down his shop during the day for calls to respond. His customers knew if they didn’t see his truck, he was on an emergency call. He still missed the department until the end.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Francis cherished his time spent with family and friends, engaging in activities such as snowmobiling, golfing, trips with friends, and enjoying casinos. Three-card poker was his favorite game. As a loving grandfather to his granddaughters, Paige and Catrina, he created lasting memories through numerous vacations.  He was very proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.

The year after his retirement, Francis was honored as the Grand Marshal of the Spring Grove Fourth of July Parade. The family always loved this holiday, watching the parade in front of his shop. It became a cherished tradition, resembling a big reunion with friends.

Known for his ever-present willingness to help, Francis wishes to be remembered for his generosity. He leaves behind his loving wife, Elizabeth, sons Kenneth (Melanie) and Christopher (Paula), granddaughters Paige and Catrina, as well as his surviving brother, James (Diana), sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Francis was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah, his parents, and his parents-in-law, Sam and Margaret Derosa, along with an infant brother, Richard, and many aunts and uncles.

The family express their gratitude to Journey Care, particularly Rachael and Lisa, for the exceptional care provided during his final months.

Francis will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his legacy of kindness and generosity will endure. In accordance with Francis’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. The family plans to hold a private family remembrance at a later date.
