David Hucker Kick age 88 of Grayslake, Illinois passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 after a brave 5-year battle with colon cancer (just two months shy of his 89 birthday). Throughout David’s life he has lived in Libertyville, Grayslake, Round Lake, Oxford, Wisconsin Dells and for the last almost 5 years back in Grayslake with his daughter Connie and son-in law Greg Larson until his passing. David loved life, he was a true fighter… all the way. He wrote, “It’s not the fighter in the fight, it’s the fight in the fighter”.

David was born July 25, 1932 in Libertyville to Horace John Sr. and Marie V. Larsen Kick. The family ran several farms throughout their stay in Libertyville, and at one time bottled and sold milk door to door. David attended Central grade school in Libertyville from 1938 to 1944. During this time in Libertyville the boys were introduced to the sport of boxing by their father. The brothers, including David boxed with the Libertyville Boys Club and participated in many of the Lake County Junior Amateur Tournaments.

After 6th grade the family moved to a farm in Round Lake where David attended the Round Lake grade school followed by Freshman year at Grant Community High School. Boxing remained a big part of the Kick brothers lives. David belonged to the Fox Lake Boys Boxing Club and participated in many Junior American Legion Boxing Tournaments.

In 1947 the family bought a dairy farm in Oxford Wisconsin. David attended Union Free High School in Oxford his Sophomore, Junior and Senior year and graduated in 1950.

David continued his passion for boxing and boxed in Fond du lac and Milwaukee from 1950 to 1953 and won District and State Golden Gloves Championships. In 1954 and 1955 he boxed in Rockford and at Chicago Stadium and won Golden Gloves again.

In 1955 and 1957 he served for the US Navy aboard the USS Okanogan (APA 220), the ship was designated to pick up and drop off soldiers and marines from various locations including a maneuver at Okinawa to get a large group of Marines.

In 1958 David started his family, and soon after began his passion for bowling. He worked at Spinney Run, Grayslake postal service, ran a restaurant in Fox Lake, worked for Orkin for many years and again was a restaurant entrepreneur in Wisconsin Dells. During the 60’s through the 80’s he was notably a high game bowler and enjoyed his teammates and time at the lanes.

David always looked forward to attending family and high school reunions. He spoke proudly about his children and grandchildren, family history and sometimes just loved to make jokes to anyone willing or not, to listen. He most notably and humbly was passionate about his years of boxing and bowling. He loved watching the news and always wanted to have a good debate (talk) about politics. He was a simple man, sometimes quiet and sometimes loud, he never needed much and never asked for much. He loved life, loved his family……… He is very missed and so very much loved.

David is survived by; sister Grace Zimmerman; children; Donald Kick, Connie (Greg) Larson, Mari Kick, Joey (Kelly) Kick, Julie and Sheila; Grandchildren Josh, William (Kori), Clayton, Kyle, Samantha, Amber, Vanessa, Savanah, Cole, Matthew, Skylar, Drew, Cate and Zachary; Great Grandchildren Garryn, Irelynn, Brandt, Lucas, Valentina and many nieces and nephews.
